Mother’s Day is a day where we honor our beloved mothers. It is not always easy to be a mom, so it is even more important to have a day to celebrate them! Every year before this special day many children ask themselves how they should surprise their mothers. We know it can be hard to find the perfect gift, so we’ve created a list of our favorite ways to surprise our mothers on Mother’s Day.

All mothers like to be surprised on their special day (even if they say they don’t!). Just remember you are never too old to surprise your Mom. Here are some of our favorite ideas to celebrate your mom, even remotely:

Homemade breakfast

Do you like baking? How about a yummy self-made breakfast for your mom and the rest of the family?

Homemade breakfast for your mom

Have you got some extra time on your hands? Why not bake your mom a cake or a fresh batch of cookies and combine this with some homemade jam and fruit to make a pretty platter for her. We used this easy and delicious cake and cookie recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 300g flour
  • 100g sugar
  • 100g butter
  • lemon peel
  • jam

Instructions:

  1. Let's make the shortbread first: take a bowl and add flour, sugar, butter, eggs and lemon peel (keep the same order). Mix the ingredients together.
  2. Once you’ve combined the ingredients in a bowl, leave it to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  3. Afterward, take it out and make yourself some space to roll out the shortbread pastry:
  • tip1: help yourself to extra flour to avoid sticky shortbread on your countertops;
  • tip 2: to roll out the short pastry, use a rolling pin or any glass bottle).
  1. Take the mold for your pie, butter it up and flour it.
  2. Put the shortbread on top and cut the extra parts.
  3. Put the jam on it.
  4. Make the strips with the remaining shortbread.
  5. Finally: back it for 40 min at 180°degrees.

Whatever you decide to make your mom, make sure that it’s her favorite! Place a blanket in the garden or even in the living room and surprise her with a breakfast picnic. Or why not surprise her with a breakfast tray in bed?

Buy her a bouquet of flowers

There’s no denying that moms love flowers. So why not bring her a bouquet of her favorite ones? Going outside and picking some flowers in the field can also be a fun activity for kids. A great alternative can be to have flowers delivered from your local flower store. It’s also an especially important time to be supporting local shops! Have the flower store deliver them to your mom’s house or place them in front of her door yourself.

Make a DIY

Children love doing DIYs, so why not have them make something special for Mother's Day? Create a crafted gift made with love, and send it off to grandma! Babysitters or remote babysitters could help the kids with that, so that kids can also make a special gift for their mom (who won’t know about it until Mother's Day!). There are many different DIYs that you can make for this special day. We made these cute ornaments that are not only easy to make but also look fabulous as decorations in the house.

6 steps on how to make the perfect diy for Mother’s Day

  • Mix the ingredients (flour, salt and water) into a dough.
  • Form it into big coins.
  • Press the flowers onto it and make a hole (to be used for the string later).
  • Let them dry for at least 48 hours in the sun (can also be dried in the oven but air drying is more energy efficient).
  • Pull the string through the hole.
  • At the end spray some clear varnish at the ornaments to ensure the flowers keep their color longer.

A home-made card can be a good idea as well. You can write inside how much you love and appreciate her. Another alternative could be to make her accessories for the house. You could create a bracelet so she will always remember this day and how special she is to you!

Photo memories diy

Create a personalized photo album or picture frames for Mother’s Day. One of our favorite ideas is the souvenir glass!

the perfect family memories diy

Take empty glass jars and upcycle them to create holiday souvenirs or original photo frames. Instead of buying a new frame, you can let your imagination run wild with nothing more than a recycled glass jar! Use cute pictures of you and your mom together. The more pictures you have, the better! You could create a glass jar photo frame using a photograph of the whole family or with a photo of just your mom. After surprising her, the most beautiful part of creating it, is you can reminisce together in memories.

Video calls

Special situations require special actions. If you cannot see your mother in person on Mother’s Day, you can always surprise her with a video call Use different apps or programs such as Skype or Whatsapp where you can have breakfast together or just spend some time with her.

If your mother lives far away in another time zone a good idea is to record a video and send it to her. So when she wakes up the first thing she will see is your video message!

Play an instrument

Does your mom like music? Perhaps she loves to dance? You could play her favorite songs with your instrument or even write her a song! Performing it live for her will undoubtedly make her happy (let’s be honest, she’ll probably cry!). An alternative could be to play via video call or even in front of her doorstep. This way, the neighbours will also see how much she means to you and she’ll be the talk of the town.

No matter the means to surprise your mom on Mother’s Day, it is important to make it a personalized gift to make sure she feels special. Always keep in mind that Mother’s Day is there to celebrate and appreciate what your mother is doing. Nevertheless, this should not only happen one day a year but also every other day!
